Nwonyo Fishing Festival

This is a cultural festival of the Nwonyo people of Ibi Local Government Area in Taraba State celebrated in commemoration of the river goddess for a bountiful fishing harvest year in Nwonyo Lake. It started about 96 years ago.

“Nwonyo” which literally implies “a hideout” for monstrous aquatic like crocodiles and hippopotamus is a lake situated some five kilometers north of Ibi town.

It is usually celebrated annually during the dry season when the dams are not heavy. During this festival, there are cultural displays such as swimming competition, fishing competition, boat regatta, music and dance competitions, and many others.

Fishermen, during this period, use kola nut and smoked fish to appease the river goddess.

After the fishing activities, the main festival which is the fishing expedition commences which involves the displays of fishes where the ones who caught bigger fishes are commended.

Spectators who come from various places use the opportunity to buy fishes at very low prices.
