Initially, BDTH was established as a Nursing Home since 1930, then 1985 is became a New General hospital. Sequel to this changes, it became Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital in 1999 in honour of Dr Russel Barau Dikko, first Medical Doctor from Northern Nigeria before it was finally inaugurated as a teaching hospital.

BDTH as a teaching hospital is affiliated to medical schools, in which medical students receive certified practical training as professional medical practitioners.
